Abstract
Background and Objectives : The report of acute sensorineural hearing loss during pregnancy and puerperium period is very rare and treatment method is also very difficult, because systemic administration of the steroid and other method are harmful for the fetus and newborn infant with maternal mild feeding. We reviewed our experience of acute sensorineural hearing loss of pregnancy and puerperium women.

Materials and Methods : From May 2000 to April 2006, 6 pregnant women and one woman of puerperium period with acute sensorineural hearing loss were encountered at the Audiologic Clinic of our department. We reviewed the out-patient, admission charts and audiology chart retrospectively and had interview about each patient¡¯s present healthy condition and hearing state at least one year postpartum.

Results: Average age of the patients was 31 year and acute sensorineural hearing loss during pregnancy occurred frequently in 3rd trimester of 1st and 2nd times pregnancy. All cases had tinnitus, and dizziness was accompanied in only 4 cases. 6 cases of 7 patients suggested that the cause of their deafness was the stress of the domestic, occupational or pregnant environment. All cases had one side deafness as 4 on left and 3 on right. Recruitment phenomenon was seen in 6 (83.3%) of 7 cases. With intratympanic steroid injection, carbogen inhalation and intravenous injection of low molecular dextran were good treatment methods as 3 of 7 cases with completely recovery and 2 cases with partially recovery, so recovery rate was 71.4%.

Conclusion: Intratympanic steroid injection, carbogen inhalation and low molecular dextran injection were thought the safe and good treatment methods for the acute sensorineural hearing loss during pregnancy. And further more cases evaluation is necessary for the more knowledge and good statistical analysis about acute sensorineural hearing loss during pregnancy and puerperium period.
